The German 4-masted
barque MAGDALENE
VINNEN, built at
Kiel in 1921. The 4-masted barque had square sails on her
fore, main and mizzen masts and fore and aft sails on the
jigger. This was the most common type of big commercial
sailing ship in the last days of sail. Nearly all of them
were built of steel with steel masts and steel wire rigging.
The Magdalene Vinnen is still afloat under the Soviet flag (
the SEDOV
). National Maritime Museum (NPA Collection) card 307 ©
